The incident packed first 6-hours saw drama and excitement at every turn of the 14km Le Mans track. As the race distance reached twenty-five percent the no7 Audi R18 of Benoit Treluyer overtook the no17 Porsche 919 hybrid of Mark Webber to take the lead just before the Frenchman dived into the pits. The no17 Porsche had taken the lead on the opening lap of the race. The lead changed hands three times in the last 30 minutes of the sixth hour.
The LMP2 class was equally hard fought with the no47 KCMG Oreca 05-Nissan, which had started on pole position, still out in front with Matt Howson holding a comfortable 70 second leaded over the second Oreca 05 run by the Thiriet by TDS team, driven by Pierre Thiriet.
