THE DRIVER of the vehicle that hit and injured a 15-year-old student in Taguig City surrendered to the police Friday morning, a day after reports and photos of the hit-and-run incident went viral.
Marcial Mamauag Mejia faces charges for reckless imprudence resulting in physical injury and damage to property, according to Senior Supt. Arthur Asis, the Taguig police chief.

Mejia, an account manager at the Quezon City-based Monark Cat Equipment Corp., surrendered to Police Community Precinct 7 in Bonifacio Global City.
Asis said Mejia was the driver of the Toyota Avanza (UIQ 764) that hit Randel delos Reyes, a Grade 10 student at Sen. Rene Cayetano Science and Technology High School in Barangay Ususan.
The boy, who was then on his way to school on a bicycle, sustained head injuries. The motorist, who was driving a company car, sped off after the 6:45 a.m. incident on C-5 Road near a Petron gas station in Diego Silang.
Erwin Paala, secretary general of the group Families of Road Victims and Survivors, said Delos Reyes “miraculously” survived the incident and was discharged from the hospital Thursday night.
“The boy was really very brave. He thinks like a 50-year-old. He was the one who consoled the people around him,” said Paala, who visited the victim.
Mejia promised to shoulder the boy’s medical bills. –Kristine Felisse Mangunay
