The 2.8-liter 1GD-FTV will produce 174 hp and 450Nm. It will deliver 370 Nm at 1200 rpm, more than the peak torque of the old 3.0-liter diesel

Toyota has revealed details of the new diesel engines that will power the next generation of its commercial vehicles, including the Hilux pickup, Innova MPV, and Fortuner and Land Cruiser Prado SUVs.

The 2.8-liter 1GD-FTV will be in the top Hilux and Fortuner, and has been installed in the current Prado. The D-4D turbodiesel will reportedly deliver much better fuel efficiency than the outgoing 3.0-liter. The 3.0-liter was the best engine in the class when the Hilux was launched more than 10 years ago, but has since fallen behind in power, torque, and efficiency.

The 2.8-liter, while displacing less than the outgoing 3.0-liter, produces 25 percent more torque, with 11 percent more torque at low revs. Toyota promises 15 percent better fuel economy. The engine will feature Thermo Swing Wall Insulation Technology designed to improve its thermal efficiency, allowing it to achieve a 44 percent thermal efficiency rating.. A silicon-aluminum coating on the pistons allow the engine to warm up quickly. Air intake has been redesigned for greater airflow into the cylinders, and the common-rail injection system operates with better pressure control. The engine uses a pilot injection system ahead of the main injection to shorten the ignition delay. The turbocharger, a Toyota in-house movement, is 30 percent smaller with a more efficient turbine.

Along with the increased torque, the new engines are expected to deliver lower emissions and quieter operation. A urea-based system reduces up to 99 percent of nitrous oxide emissions. The engine conforms to Euro 6 emissions standards. The 2.8-liter is rated for 174hp and 450Nm, with 370Nm available at 1200 rpm, more than the peak torque of the 3.0-liter.

There will also be a 2.4-liter version producing 148 hp and 330 Nm, all of it available at 1200 rpm. Expect this to power the Innova, and the entry-level Hilux and Fortuner.

Toyota will be producing 700,000 units of the GD series diesels, destined for 90 world markets by 2016, and 150 markets by 2010.
