Sneak Preview 1999

January 01,1999

Oh sure, there are tons of new cars coming out in all parts of the world, but we have to admit that not all cars can make it in the local market. Well, based on factors such as dealers, price tag and possible buyers, here are a couple of new, production cars that are already for sale in some parts of the world, which local dealers can look at and possibly sell here in the Philippines.

Ford Focus
Voted as Europe’s Car of the Year, the Ford Focus is one mean machine! Replacing the old Escort, the Focus brings youth and vitality to the small family car segment. Its sharp, angular styling echoes well with the Focus’s sharp handling, smooth ride and powerful engine. Its interior is excellent as well with its attention to detail and well-designed egonomics. It’s relatively cheap price tag means that it could well compete with Toyota Corollas and Honda Civics. If Ford would bring the Focus here, its no question which car would be dear to the young and old alike.

New Subaru Legacy
We are all tired of seeing the four to five year old Subaru Legacy wagon that has been running through our streets. Subaru’s local dealer must look at this new Legacy wagon. Although it looks too similar to the old one, a lot of minute refinements have been made to the engine and 4WD system. It is a trifle expensive in Great Britain, but it could mean good value here if they would advertise it better and make sure that the build quality would last.

New Mazda 323
Honda Civic move over. Finally, Mazda’s new 323 reaches Civic-like refinement. Powered by a de-stroked 626 engine, the 323’s 1.8-liter engine is quite potent and quiet. The cabin is still the most spacious in its class, and the design has been given a dash of European touch. Although the ride and handling isn’t as smart as the Civic (nor the Focus’ for that matter), the 323 is still the best bargain for those looking for size and reliability in small packages.

Mercedes M-Class
Having conquered the USA and Europe, Mecedes should focus its attention onto getting buyers for its M-Class SUV vehicle. Although being 2 years old already, the M-Class is still to officially make waves here in the local scene. Powered by a 3.2-liter V6, the M-Class’s price tag should land it right smack in the middle of the Toyota Land Cruisers and Mitsubishi Pajeros. In which case, the M-Class will prove to be a great seller with a potent engine and desirable badge. With the waiting list stretching in the USA and Europe, the chances of seeing this vehicle here are slim.

New Honda Odyssey
The Dodge Caravan’s greatest threat. Honda’s new Odyssey has the same room but offers greater power, refinement, performance and reliability than its American counterpart. Re-designed this year to take on other people carriers, the Accord-based Odyssey has been stretched to accomodate 7 people and luggage with more leg-room and space. Powered by a 200 bhp 3.0-liter V6, this Odyssey is also a street racer able to beat cars such as the Civic SiR or BMW 318i.

Opel Astra
If Opel is serious in providing German enginering at Japanese prices, then why not battle the likes of the Corolla, Lancer and Civic head-on? Opel’s new Astra should be able to hold on just fine with its wide array of engine choices (1.4 and 1.6 liter engines are the best here). It has a strong resemblance to the Vectra, but this Astra is much more fun to drive, more reliable and refined than its bigger brother. Already available in some Asian countries, Opel should find it no problem to sell it here.
