A Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) traffic constable suffered facial and leg injuries after he was sideswiped by a speeding car at 6 a.m. on Wednesday.
Marlon Banban was manning traffic at the corner of Annapolis Street and Edsa in San Juan City when a Ford Lynx driven by Efren Glenn Catalbas which was turning right on Edsa hit him, a report from the MMDA Road Emergency group said.
Banban was taken to East Avenue Medical Center where he was treated for swelling in the jaw and right leg. He was discharged later in the day although doctors said they would continue to monitor his condition.
Catalbas, who said he did not see Banban before hitting him, accompanied the traffic constable to the hospital and later, to the MMDA office in Makati City, where he was asked for an explanation. It was not immediately known, however, if the MMDA would file a case against him.
Banban was the latest MMDA traffic constable to be involved in an accident while on duty. In April, traffic constable Johnny Llena was almost run over by Robert Trinidad, who was texting while driving his car.
Before that, in December 2014, MMDA traffic enforcer Sonny Acosta passed away after being in a coma for four days. Earlier, he landed in the hospital after he was dragged for several meters by the driver of a sport utility vehicle whom he had apprehended for driving in the bus lane. Charges were later filed against the SUV driver, Mark Ian Libunao, who fled after the accident. -Maricar B. Brizuela
