THE Philippines hosted the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) leaders’ meeting on Nov. 16 to 19. World leaders including United States President Barack Obama, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev will be attending ministerial and economic leaders’ meetings in various venues in Makati City and Pasay City.
Obama will reportedly be staying at the Sofitel hotel, while Xi will be at the Century Park hotel. This means that the heads of state and economic leaders will be transported to the various events, and will require cars commensurate with their status.
Stepping in to provide transportation are luxury car suppliers BMW and Mercedes-Benz. BMW’s official importer and distributor in the Philippines, Asian Carmakers Corporation (ACC) recently turned over a fleet of BMW 7 Series sedans to the APEC National Organizing Council. BMW is the summit’s official premium mobility partner, and is providing the cars to serve as shuttles for the event’s delegates and leaders.
ACC chairman emeritus Gov. Jose Ch. Alvarez turned over the BMW 7 Series cars to APEC-NOC chairman Ambassador Marciano Paynor at the Philippine International Convention Center.
Earlier in May, the BMW 5 Series cars were turned over to the APEC organizers.
“We are truly honored to play an integral role in the APEC 2015 as its official premium mobility partner. BMW has always been committed to fostering the economic growth and development of the Philippines and the Asia-Pacific Region,” said ACC president Maricar Parco. “As we complete the turnover of our vehicle fleet to the APEC-NOC, we are showcasing our continued support to the development of the region where we operate.”
Mercedes-Benz is likewise a mobility partner of the APEC 2015 CEO Summit. Mercedes will be supplying the S 400 sedan. The S 400 is currently the newest model in this segment, since the all-new BMW 7 Series will be arriving only in 2016.
The S 400 comes with a long list of standard features that will make the presidents and CEOs feel welcome. Mercedes is supplying as many as 105 cars for the APEC Business Council composed of business leaders that each head of state is bringing to the Philippines.
The Mercedes-Benz vehicles have a power output of 333 hp and 480 Nm, an air suspension system, GPS to keep tabs on the chauffeurs, Attention Assist to protect against drowsiness, and collision prevention assist.
The list of safety features includes pre-safe preventive occupant protection, and plenty of airbags, including a kneebag for the driver and pelvis bag for the front seats.
ESP stability control, LED headlamps with intelligent light control are among the active safety features.
The interior also gets an air perfume and ionizer system, large 31 cm screen for the infotainment system, and Burmester surround system with 13 speakers.
The leaders’ noggins will be kept cool by the electronic side window shades.
Philippine market leader Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) also supplied a fleet of vehicles for use in the APEC summit. TMP will be supplying no less than 296 vehicles, including 70 Toyota Camry 2.5 Gs, 43 Hiaces, 133 Fortuners, and 50 Corolla Altis.
TMP president Michinobu Sugata said, “We are thankful that we have been given this opportunity to become the mobility partner of APEC Philippines by providing 296 Toyota vehicles to be used as transportation for the public and private sectoral meetings, as well as during the summit. But more than just providing a means for mobility, Toyota is one with APEC and the Philippine government in realizing this year’s theme, ‘Building Inclusive Economies, Building a Better World.’
“True to the tagline ‘Moving Forward,’ Toyota Motor Philippines continues to support the government in its initiatives to further boost economic development and help improve the lives of the Filipino people. We are optimistic that the APEC Philippines 2015 will bring positive results and create significant impact on local industries in the country, as well as in global business operations in the region.”
