AUTHORITIES suspect that Monday’s killing of a traffic constable of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) may be work-related as the gunman waited for the victim at his assigned post.
Sidney Role, 38, was shot in the head around 2 a.m. Monday as he was talking to his brother at his post at the corner of Commonwealth Avenue and Tandang Sora Avenue in Barangay Old Balara, Quezon City.
According to investigators, the fact that the perpetrators waited for the victim at his work post made them suspect that the motive was work-related. Role was a resident of Cogeo, Antipolo City.
Based on the report of the Quezon City Police District’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit, an unidentified man walked up to Role and shot him even as the victim was talking to his brother, Riche, also a traffic constable.
Riche had gone to his brother’s post to give him his cell phone after the victim left it at home, according to QCPD-CIDU homicide section chief Insp. Elmer Monsalve.
In an interview with the Inquirer hours after the killing, Monsalve said that after shooting the victim, the gunman escaped by boarding a motorcycle driven by a cohort.
Investigators are now reviewing the footage taken by closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras in the area. Monsalve said that based on their initial findings, more than two suspects were involved in the MMDA traffic enforcer’s killing as they spotted a tricycle driver acting as a lookout.
Minutes before the shooting, a young man with a gun was also seen on the CCTV footage walking back and forth in the area as if waiting for the victim.
Killing Role on Commonwealth Avenue was a risky move since it was a well-policed and busy thoroughfare, Monsalve said. -Jaymee T. Gamil
