Toyota Motor Philippines is starting 2016 with a bang. It has launched its biggest weapon in the popular SUV category, the all-new Fortuner. The new Fortuner will retain its seven-seat configuration, and will feature new engines and transmissions. The top engine is a 2.8-liter turbodiesel good for 177 ps and 450 Nm. This is only available as a four-wheel drive model. The four-wheel drive is no longer the full-time system of the previous generation, but switchable via a dashboard knob. The lower variants are powered by a 2.4-liter turbodiesel good for 150 ps and 400 Nm. There’s also a 2.7-liter gasoline engine producing 165 ps and 245Nm.
Despite the reduction in displacement from the previous 3.0 and 2.5 liters, the engines are more powerful and produce more torque. Even the 2.4-liter diesel produces more torque than the outgoing 3.0-liter diesel. Toyota promises that the new diesel engine family will be smoother, quieter, and more fuel-efficient. The transmission will be switchable from Power to Economy mode.
The 4×4 models will have front, driver knee, side and curtain airbags. They will also include keyless go with Engine start-stop button.
The variants and pricing are:
4×4:
2.8V Diesel AT white pearl P2,141,000
2.8V Diesel AT P2,126,000
4×2:
2.4V Diesel AT white pearl P1,751,000
2.4V Diesel AT P1,736,000
2.4G Diesel AT P1,476,000
2.7G Gasoline AT P1,392,000
2.4G Diesel MT P1,386,000
The P2-million plus price tag of the range-topping 2.8V may be a bit of a shocker to those who remember the introductory prices of the Fortuner in 2005 hovering around the P1.5 million mark. But rivals such as the Ford Everest and Mitsubishi Montero Sport have already topped the P2 million price for their highest variants. In the pricing sweet spot are the 2.4G diesel AT at just below P1.5 million, and the “chauffeur special” 2.4G diesel MT at just below P1.4 million. With these variants, the Fortuner is aiming to retain its leadership position in the segment.
Colors are: Super White, Silver Metallic, Attitude Black Mica, Gray Metallic, White Pearl, and the new Phantom Brown Metallic and Avant-Garde Br
