4 dead in motorcycle, truck collision in Iloilo City

ILOILO CITY — Four persons died after the motorcycle which they boarded rammed into a ten-wheeler truck in Barangay Calaigang in San Rafael town about 4:20 a.m. on Sunday.

Motorcycle driver Eduardo Acutan and passengers Gilbert Cerbasa, 19; Gino Didoy, 20; and Art Chan Barbicho, 19, were already dead when they were brought to the District Hospital in Baratoc Viejo town located 60.5 kilometers from Iloilo City.

The four fatalities were from Barangay Milan in Lemery town located 540 kilometers from the city.

P/Insp. Ruben Perra, chief of Police of San Rafel Municipal Station, said in an interview with RMN-Iloilo that the motorcycle collided with the truck carrying sugarcane while at the vicinity of Barangay Calaigang in San Rafael town located about 668.2 kilometers west of Iloilo City.

Truck driver Eduardo Maniya, 54, of Barangay Maybato Norte in San Jose town in Antique province was headed for Passi City in Iloilo province to deliver sugarcane when the accident happened.

Maniya, who is now detained at the San Rafael Municipal Police Station, told police that he stepped on the truck’s brake pedal when he saw the motorcycle headed at his direction but it was already too late. –Joel Franco
