Play Golf: Volkswagen PH launches Highline and Comfortline variants
The sporty Volkswagen Golf was an excellent way to introduce the model, and now VW Philippines is expanding the lineup by introducing two new Golf variants.
What is it?
The Golf Highline and Comfortline are new variants of the highly-rated Volkswagen hatchback. Would non-GTI Golf variants be as well regarded as their sporty sibling? VW Philippines reckons so, as the new models come with many of the features that make the Golf special.
Engine and transmission
Just like the GTI, the new Golf variants sport turbocharged engines. The new engine is a 1.4-liter TSI four-cylinder with decent 150ps and 250Nm. Peak torque is available at just 1500rpm. This mates to the excellent dual-clutch seven-speed DSG transmission. Not to worry, as these cars are gasoline-fed.
Chassis
The Golf rides on front struts and multi-link rear suspension. If the Golf GTI is anything to go by, the suspension setup is able to deliver a comfortable ride while still offering a firm feel and responsive steering. Four-wheel discs are at all corners.
Just as crucial is the electronic differential lock (EDL) with XDS system found on the Golf GTI. The EDL system all but eliminates wheelspin, important in a front-wheel drive car with ample torque. Meanwhile, the XDS component neutralizes potential understeer by applying brake pressure to the inner wheel when taking a corner. The system makes driving the Golf GTI an utter joy, and should do the same here.
Styling
Form follows function in the Golf hatchback. Its compact bodywork is free of any unneeded adornment. What’s left are the trademark Golf styling cues, such as the neat arrow shape between the rear door and hatchback. Available bi-xenon headlamps and LED taillights give the Golf a premium look. The wheel wells are nicely filled out by 17-inch wheels with 225/45 series tires. Gaps between body panels are commendably tight.
Interior
Despite its modest 4255-mm length, the Golf has a relatively large interior, thanks to its long 2637mm wheelbase. The console features a touchscreen control panel, with the audio unit offering USB port and phone connectivity. The console includes matte metallic trim to contrast with the black plastics.
The Highline variant features leather seats and dual-zone automatic climate control with rear aircon vent.
Safety
Active driving aids include the active differential. Also on board are seven airbags with proactive safety system: seatbelts will tighten and windows close when an impending crash is detected. Electronic stability control, traction control, and engine drag torque control help keep the car on course. There are also park sensors all around the car to aid in parking. The anti-theft system includes an interior monitoring system using ultrasonic motion sensors.
Pricing and colors
The Golf Highline 1.4 TSI DSG is at P1,739,000. The Golf Comfortline 1.4 TSI DSG is at P1,590,000. Color choices for both variants are: Pure White, Sunset Pure White, Sunset Red Metallic, Limestone Grey and Deep Black Pearl. Pacific Blue is exclusively available for the Golf Comfortline.
