CALLING it God’s “miracle,” a 26-year-old public high school teacher foiled a man’s attempt to take his motorcycle after the suspect’s gun jammed and other people came to his aid.
Case investigator PO2 Regor Germedia said that the incident happened around 5:30 a.m. Monday as Jonathan de Castro stopped his motorcycle at the corner of Karuhatan and MacArthur Highway in Valenzuela City.
De Castro told the police that a man carrying a motorcycle helmet—later identified by authorities as Gerald Rabino—suddenly got on his vehicle, poked a gun into his side, declared a heist and told him to keep driving.
The teacher from Bignay National High School in Valenzuela City, said he did as he was told but when he passed by a patrol car with three policemen inside, he deliberately toppled the motorcycle and tried to overpower Rabino. At one point, the suspect tried to shoot him but the firearm jammed.
The commotion attracted the attention of the policemen and other concerned citizens, mostly motorcycle riders, who came to De Castro’s aid. They punched Rabino and got his gun away from him.
“I knew Jesus would rescue me. He will protect those who trust and believe Him,” Castro said, adding that he was confident he would be unharmed. Jodee A. Agoncillo
