Labor Day weekend saw Autohub Group and MINI Philippines at the Clark International Speedway (CIS) in Angeles, Pampanga with about a hundred customers and members of the Mini Car Club Philippines (MCCP) to commemorate the introduction of its all-new MINI Clubman.
Several MINI Clubman units were deployed for lapping, braking and slalom exercises to show the event participants its agile kart-like feel and overall performance of the all-new Clubman despite having a longer and wider wheelbase than its predecessor model.
MCCP members were also invited to bring their own MINI Coopers and among the activities aside from doing laps around the track during the track day were a quarter mile drag and a combination drag and slalom race.
The Autohub Group also displayed some Lotus cars during the event and invited selected participants to do some lapping in the afternoon of the whole day event.
It also invited members of the Ford Mustang Club and conducted similar lapping exercises, as well as a drag/slalom contest.
The event was made possible with the support of Pilipinas Shell and V-Kool Philippines, which gave away merchandise, lubricant products, gift certificates and other prizes to the winners of the drag and slalom best time exercises.
One of MCCP’s board of trustees, Randy Yap, took home the best time award, besting runner ups Marcus Enriquez, Mon Tanjuatco, and Charles Tan with just fractions of seconds behind.
The MINI Clubman is the longest and widest MINI in its current line up and has the largest cargo and passenger room as well.
With its rear seats folded, the Clubman offers 47.9 cubic feet of luggage room, 15.1 cubic feet more than the previous generation.
Its 5-door layout did away with its previous right-hand only clubdoor, replaced by a full-size door for easier ingress and egress.
MINI retained its iconic bi-parting rear doors or “barn doors” and added a new hands-free feature that enables the driver to open its rear right hand door by swinging his/her foot under the sensor located in the rear bumper.
It has three driving modes available to suit driver preference. The green mode offers “driving fun” but features the most fuel-efficient mode. The mid-mode offers a mixture of fuel efficiency and some MINI-spirited driving, while the Sport mode offers the best “maximum go-kart feel” and performance.
The highest variant, Clubman S, is powered by a twin-turbo, 2.0-liter engine delivering 192 hp and 280 Nm of torque, while the non-S gets a twin-turbo, 1.5-liter engine with 136 hp and 220 Nm torque.
Acceleration is from zero to 100 kph in 7.1 seconds and 9.1 seconds, respectively, for the Clubman S and Clubman.
