Formula E to run in Hong Kong this October

Formula E, the world’s first all-electric motor racing series finds itself on the streets of this former British colony. The Hong Kong e-prix takes place on October 7 – 9, 2016 around the Central Harbourfront.

The iconic Hong Kong skyline will be the backdrop for first race of the 2016-2017 season. The circuit features a 2-km track with 10 turns, including 2 hairpins. The e-prix will pass Lung Wo road, Admiralty, and Man Yiu street around the Central Ferry Pier, and City Hall.

Motorsports has always been associated with petrol engines churning out mind-numbing horsepower, generating bone-crushing downforce and ear-splitting engine noise, but the organizers of Formula E had another agenda. They wanted to give race fans the speed, challenge, and action that they crave, without the use of petrol. Formula E is the first ever “green series”. A Formula E car measures 500 cm in length, 180 cm in width and a height of just 125 cm. It has a five-speed gearbox, and a maximum of 1000 volts peaking at 270hp. This enables it to go from 0-100 kph in just 3 seconds, on to a maxmimum speed of 225 kph.

The sports organizers are also encouraging fans to support the drivers, by logging on to the Formula E website or on their social media accounts on both Facebook and Twitter. Fans can vote for their favorite driver and the top three will be given an additional 100kj which they can use once to boost the car at the 180 kw – 200 kw window.

Formula E, like its more famous relation, Formula One, has practice sessions on Friday and qualifying on Saturday. Each race takes about 50 minutes with a mandatory pit stop to change cars. Points scoring is similar to Formula One, with 25 points going to the winner, 18 for the runner up and 15 for third place, with points being awarded all the way to 10th place.
