‘Crazy yellow Kia’ driver may face raps

The Makati City government intends to file charges against the driver of the “crazy yellow Kia” involved in a chase with Rockwell security guards last week, according to Mayor Abby Binay.

“Let me make it clear that the case is not yet closed. We do not tolerate this kind of behavior in our city,” Binay said  on Thursday, adding that ignoring the incident would send the wrong signal to the public.

“Mere extrajudicial settlement with injured parties does not automatically absolve the driver of her criminal liability,” Binay stressed.

The driver, 28-year-old Jamie Camille Brojan, hit a barangay service vehicle and several other cars on Kalayaan Avenue as she tried to flee from Rockwell security guards apprehending her for illegal parking. Brojan also hit the guards’ motorcycles during the hour-long chase, leaving four of them injured.

Binay has ordered Makati police chief Senior Supt. Rommil Mitra to submit a final report on the case.

The city legal department will file appropriate charges against Brojan  based on the results of the police investigation and let the prosecutor determine if the case should be filed in court, Binay said.

Mitra earlier informed Binay that Brojan was caught driving without a license and has yet to return to present it.  Brojan also promised to submit a medical certificate to prove that she has a bipolar disorder, Mitra said.

Brojan was a no-show at yesterday’s hearing conducted by the Land Transportation Office (LTO). A certain Lawyer Granada said he was representing her but could not present any proof of his claim, according to LTO chief Edgar Galvante.

“We want to check if she really is fit to drive so we can protect her from herself as well as other motorists around her,” Galvante said.

According to Galvante, they would give Brojan one more week to present herself before the agency. “If she does not appear at all, she is waiving her opportunity to explain herself,” he said. “In that case, we will decide on the matter based on the information we gathered.” —Erika Sauler , WITH JHESSET O.
