The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is eyeing the privatization of its towing operations by end-March 2017 to improve and “professionalize” its services.

According to MMDA officer in charge and general manager Tim Orbos, the terms of reference for the proposed privatization project were still being finalized.

At present, the agency has over 120 accredited towing companies. In June, it revoked the accreditation of Arcson Towing Services after some employees tried to extort money from a motorist. Later that month, 25 personnel from different towing firms were fired after testing positive for drugs.

Current operators can apply to take over the agency’s towing services, Orbos said. Revenues will be split between the winning bidder and government. –Jovic Yee
