A total of 446 persons were killed in road crashes in 2016, according to the data recorded by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).
Based on the information, most of the crashes happened at daytime (from 6 a.m. to 5:55 p.m.) although there were more fatal crashes at night and the wee hours of the morning (between 6 p.m. and 5:55 a.m.).
The Metro Manila Accident Recording and Analysis System (MMARAS) registered 68,499 road crashes at daytime and 40,823 during nighttime, including 943 cases where no time was indicated.
A total of 173 fatal crashes occurred at daytime while 253 happened at night.
The MMARAS is operated by the Road Safety Unit of the MMDA with the help of the Traffic Enforcement Unit of the Philippine National Police.
Motorcycles still accounted for the highest fatal crash rate with 218 cases, followed by trucks with 103 and cars with 98.
For accidents involving damage to property, cars accounted for the highest rate with 100,665, followed by trucks with 18,052 and vans with 17,406. –Erika Sauler
