Conglomerate San Miguel Corp. is preparing for its next wave of diversification which seeks to add next-generation technology businesses such as the production of micro-chips, smart phones and electric cars to its portfolio.

SMC president Ramon S. Ang told reporters after the stockholders meeting of Top Frontier Investments Holdings Inc. on Wednesday that SMC was heading into a new phase of diversification nine years after the conglomerate built and acquired new businesses outside of its traditional food and beverage bailiwick.

“The next phase is go to the next-generation electronics and manufacturing,” Ang said.

These may include chips, plug-in or battery-operated vehicles or consumer electronics like smart phones, he said.

The next wave of diversification may also include e-commerce businesses, Ang said. –Doris Dumlao-Abadilla
