In another bit of news that’s hard to swallow, Back to the Future is already 25 years old. Amidst a flurry of fan activity and to mark the occasion, an all-electric DeLorean DMC-12 will be hitting the roads of Italy, in celebration of the film’s anniversary in Europe.
The folks from Wired Italy are putting together the one-off project. The group partnered with car conversion experts at eCars Now! Italy. They ordered custom batteries to South Korea; a German company then molded them to fit the DeLorean chassis. The DeLorean was sourced from Dallas, Texas.
The lithium ion batteries will power a 1.21 jiggawatt, er rather, 90 kW engine to propel the car from Milan to Rome, a nearly 700-km journey. They will be avoiding the autostrada and taking mostly rural roads, to show off the car to as many people as possible. “The way from Milano to Rome is very beautiful,” he said. “We want to do this driving safe and rediscovering a different experience with driving, says” Wired Italy features editor Massimiliano Ferramondo.
The car is expected to go from 0-96 km/h in 4.2 seconds, and achieve a range of nearly 200 km.
