Pump Up the Jazz

July 26,2005

HONDA HAS DECIDED TO INJECT MORE FUN INTO ITS JAZZ hatchback by launching the new 1.5 VTEC variant. The engine is already familiar as the top power plant for the City; it pumps out 108 bhp and 142 Nm. The engine mates to either a five-speed manual or the CVT transmission with sport mode and 7-speed virtual-gear mode. Introduced last year, the Jazz led the car industry in developing a new niche in the Philippines: the hatchback market. In the first half of 2005 alone, the Jazz sold over 900 units.

The Jazz’s driving position, long-distance comfort, and handling response are all at the top of the segment. The Jazz’s diminutive chassis is packed with high-tech features, including the CVT and variable-effort electric power steering.

With the introduction of the 1.5V, Honda answers the market’s clamor for stronger performance for the decisively sporty, yet practical Jazz. The Jazz 1.5V dons 15” alloy wheels, rear disc brakes, a high-mounted stop lamp and rear center-mounted antenna. Furthermore, the Jazz is distinguished by standard color-keyed side protector moldings and wrap-around body skirts. The stance of the 1.5V is lower by around 5 mm.

Inside, the 1.5V gains a black color scheme rather than the 1.3S’s gray. In addition, the audio system has been upgraded to accommodate a Pioneer in-dash CD/MP3/WMA audio system with 4 speakers. Practicality though has remained intact with the versatile configuration ULT rear seats. The 382-liter trunk area (with rear seats up) is capable of swallowing three golf bags. Furthermore, the Jazz allows a maximum storage space of up to 2 meters in length in Utility Mode and 2.6 meters in Long mode.

The 1.3-liter I-DSI Jazz is still available. Its maximum torque of 116 Nm is available at a low 2800 rpm, providing excellent acceleration from standstill and long respites from the fuel refilling pump. The steel-wheeled Type-A model though, has been dropped. Furthermore, anti-lock brakes and dual SRS airbags are only available on the 1.5V variants.

New colors include white, black, and a peculiar pink (“Iris Red”) version for the ladies or very secure guys. The simplified lineup consists of 1.3S manual (PHP 632,000), 1.3S CVT (PHP 672,000), 1.5V manual, (PHP 712,000) and 1.5V CVT (PHP 752,000).
