At least four people were killed and several others injured in a vehicle smashup that involved a trailer truck carrying steel structural beams on Thursday afternoon.
The nine-vehicle pileup happened along Batasan-San Mateo Road corner Sunnyside Drive in Barangay Batasan Hills at 3:45 p.m.
The truck driver, Nilo Calimutan, is already under the custody of the Quezon City Police District (QCPD), according to Chief Supt. Guillermo Eleazar, district director.
As of press time, four were confirmed dead, including a male motorcycle driver and one woman who was pronounced dead on arrival at General Malvar Hospital. Two more died at St. Matthews Hospital in San Mateo, Rizal province.
Initial reports said at least 10 people were wounded and rushed to different hospitals for treatment.
Eleazar said the truck’s gears reportedly gave way due to its heavy load. Calimutan then allegedly lost control of the vehicle.
Other than the truck, two motorcycles, two tricycles, two private vehicles, a jeepney and a towing truck were also involved in the crash.
Clearing operations are currently underway to remove the beams along the road.
As of press time, IBP Road going to San Mateo and Marikina City are closed to traffic due to the crash, according to the Quezon City public affairs department. Motorists are advised to detour at Litex Road instead. –Jhesset O. Enano
