The epitome of cool

The boxy “toolbox” design evokes this crossover’s tough and utilitarian design sensibilities

Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) unveiled the much-awaited new crossover genre Tj Cruiser concept vehicle at the 45th Tokyo Motor Show. The design is a cool fusion of a boxy cargo van and the powerful design of an SUV. According to Mai Takeuchi, from TMC’s Business and Operation Planning Division, TJ stands for “Toolbox Joy” while the Cruiser is a nod to Toyota’s 4×4 heritage. “Joy represents Toyota’s outlook on today’s active outdoor lifestyle like surfing, camping and the like.” She added.
The boxy “toolbox” design evokes this crossover’s tough and utilitarian design sensibilities intended for owners who weave work and play in their active lifestyles. Inside the cavernous cabin, it features a flexible seating system in which the passenger seats including the front seat can be reclined completely flat, allowing storage of outdoor equipment such as a 3-meter surfboard, camping gear or trail bikes with ease.
While the concept of “surfer” vans is not new, the Tj Cruiser makes a huge leap in bringing it from the “flower power” surfer vans of the 1960s to today’s millennial-driven market with features like a four wheel drive system, a hybrid powerplant, large SUV-sized tires and wheels, scuff-resistant surfaces for its hood, roof ad fenders and a number of tie-down points for anchoring outdoor equipment.

Its large opening sliding side doors and tailgate is designed to allow ease of entry for passengers as well as cargo and equipment, much similar of a large-sized van. Its imposing monocoque body will use Toyota’s New Generation Architecture and new generation hybrid engine to allow the perfect marriage of power and fuel efficiency.
