80% local vehicle component still a dream

The spreadsheet below shows how much CBUs (complete built ups) outnumber locally assembled CKDs (complete knock downs) in car dealer showrooms these days.

Various government administrations since the 1960s have tried to come up with policies and programs that would spur car manufacturing in the Philippines, but up to now sales consist of 70 percent CBUs and only 30 percent CKDs.

Once upon a time, the dream was to have vehicles in the Philippines to be 80 percent CKDs.

Time will tell whether the Comprehensive Automotive Resurgence Strategy (CARS) program will succeed with only two participants.

PDI Motoring sent a vital statistics questionnaire to over 20 car companies, and those who responded are listed below.
