This year’s Motorshow Manila was different from past Philippine motorshows: new cars were conspicuously absent from the show! We’re not sure if this was intentional or not. After all, the Motorshow poster was a collage of parts of different cars.
What this Motorshow did have was trucks…lots of them. From the Hummer clones from M.D. JeepStar to the muscular new Ford Explorer Sport Trac, trucks dominated the event. Doesn’t anyone want a car anymore? Blame it on Manila’s floods and potholes; everyone’s dream car is an off-roader.
We wish that major players like Toyota and Honda would use motorshow venues to introduce their new models like the upcoming Corolla and Civic. Concept cars slated for possible future production would be even better.
Meanwhile, send in the trucks!
We were glad that several new models showed up at the Motorshow, particularly the updated Trooper and all-new Patrol and Explorer Sport-Trac. These as well as most of the vehicles at the show were trucks. We were still desperately lacking good cars at the show.
We still think that Honda, Mitsubishi and Toyota missed a great opportunity to launch its 2001 midsize (1.6 liter) cars at the Show. Even if the cars are still some weeks away from going on sale, just one or two examples would have been enough to make their target buyers melt with desire. What is a Motorshow if it can’t do precisely that?
