Nissan loads tech and power into its all-new Terra SUV
Nissan rejoined the pickup-platform vehicle segment with a bold and full-featured entry, the all-new Terra, that packs performance and technology in a big, attractive shell.
Terra is powered by a turbodiesel engine that delivers 190 hp and 450 Nm, giving it reportedly best-in-class acceleration.
Maximum torque comes on at just 2,000 rpm.
It’s paired with a four-wheel drive system with differential lock for off-road use.
The SUV is built on a ladder-frame chassis, allowing it to carry seven passengers and their cargo with ease. The chassis has been reinforced to allow off-road use.
Ground clearance is a generous 225 mm to get across those nasty floods and mall parking lot ramps.
Vehicle height is kept well below 1.9 meters, allowing it entry into most parking buildings.
Length is 4,885 mm, well below the 5 meter capacity of a typical garage.
The rear suspension uses a five-link coil spring setup paired with a rigid real-wheel axle to improve ride comfort while still maintaining load capacity.
Terra reportedly has best-in-class cabin space, enough for seven passengers. The second row features a full-flat fold-and-tumble feature for convenient entry to the third row.
Nissan has loaded the Terra with its advanced driver assist technology. Some of these were demonstrated on test tracks near their headquarters in Yokohama.
The Nissan Intelligent Mobility technology includes lane departure warning (LDW), blind spot warning (BSW), and intelligent around view (IAV) monitor with moving object detection.
LDW and BSW help alert the driver he is drifting out of his lane, or when another vehicle is in the car’s blind spot.
The IAV monitor gives a 360-degree birds-eye view of the car’s surrounding, making parking safer and easier.
Terra is the first SUV to have a smart rear view (SRV) mirror. When the car is fully occupied, the rear view mirror is usually filled with the view of all the passengers’ heads. The SRV mirror allows the driver to switch to the rear view camera, for an unobstructed view of the rear.
Other safety systems include: hill start assist and hill descent control.
It’s appropriate that Nissan picked the Philippines as the launch country for the Southeast Asian market, and the second in the world, being the most popular here.
The Philippine market is well-informed and quite discerning, so it’s interesting to see how the Terra, with its boatload of features and technology, will carve out a share of the market.
