MANILA, Philippines — More than 500,000 motorists have been caught by Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA)’s no contact apprehension policy for various violations.

According to the data released by the traffic agency on Thursday, a total of 539,022 traffic violators were recorded by the agency as of the end of November 2018.

The top violation committed by motorists is for violation of yellow lane policy with a total of 289,154 or more than 50 percent of the total figure.

The yellow lane policy of the MMDA prohibits private vehicles from using the said lane along the stretch of Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (Edsa) except when motorists are about to turn.

Provincial buses passing along Edsa are also not allowed to use the said lane and are encourage to use the third lane instead.

The yellow lanes, or the first and second lanes in Edsa, are intended for city buses alone. With this, city buses are not allowed to use any other lanes.

Drivers of city buses who used other lanes aside from the yellow lanes would be apprehended by traffic enforcers.

Second on the list of the top violations committed by drivers were loading and unloading of passengers in prohibited zones with 85,838 incidents were caught by MMDA’s surveillance cameras.

Disregarding traffic signs came third with 42,277 violators caught by the agency.

One bus driver violated the bus segregation scheme of the MMDA, making it the last violation on the list of the agency. /je – By: Faye Orellana
