Google Maps to help motorists navigate Metro streets on ‘coding’ days

February 17,2019

MANILA, Philippines — Google Maps will be launching a new feature that would advise motorists which roads to  avoid during their “coding” day or the day their vehicles are covered by the Unified Vehicular Volume Reduction Program (UVVRP) or the “number coding scheme” of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

“With number coding (feature) on Google Maps, all Metro Manila motorists will soon have a tool to navigate Metro Manila on a number coding day,” Yves Gonzales, head of public policy and government relations at Google Philippines said in a forum on Wednesday.

The user may “simply tell Maps their assigned coding day then Google Maps will recommend a route that avoids restricted roads.”

Aside from the number coding feature, Google Maps also launched motorbike mode iOS devices which will help motorists have “more accurate travel times and easy routes using landmarks.”

Meanwhile, Google Maps also worked with the Department of Tourism to provide an updated street view imagery of the Boracay Island.

Google Maps’ latest machine learning techniques allowed it to recognize information from satellite images which helps in identifying more locations in the Philippines.
