Overland Kings is the brainchild of Joel Pedro, scion of the popular Hapee toothpaste brand whose passion for outdoor adventures gave him the inspiration to cash in on the growing demand for offroading and camping lifestyle. He calls himself the company’s “chief adventure officer” as opposed to having the usual CEO or MD title.
Overlanding is a term that originated from Australia which refers to traveling to remote destinations where the journey itself is part of the experience. “We are promoting this lifestyle for people to get away from the stressful concrete jungle and have a great time. It’s family time away from gadgets and social media.” says Pedro.
The word “glamping” on the otherhand, was known to have appeared first in UK back in 2005. After a decade, the word was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2016. However, the concept of “glamping” is certainly nothing new. It is the portmanteau of glamour and camping, connoting that of luxurious tent living. It is said to have started in the 16th century by the Scottish Earl of Atholl who prepared a lavish tent encampment for King James V who was visiting at the time.
In other cultures, the Ottomans made ostentatious and even palatial imperial tents which can be easily erected and dismantled from one military mission to the next. Fast forward four centuries later, an African Safari became a trendy thing to do in the 1920s, organized for wealthy travelers who love to embark on outdoor adventures but who are also not willing to sacrifice comfort and luxury.
