June 04,2019

NEW exterior pieces, improved handling, additional safety equipment and updated multimedia mark the revisions set to be made to the 2020 version of Lexus’s premium crossover, the RX.

“The new 2020 Lexus RX improves our best-selling vehicle with a focus on the future of the brand — one of sophisticated yet bold, design,” said Lisa Materazzo, vice-president of Lexus marketing in the US.

The 2020 RX has a redesigned grille matched to slimmer headlamps. Triple-beam LED headlamps have also been redesigned as an option. The taillamps feature an an “L” motif across the top, mirroring the inverted “Ls” across the bottom. Reshaped reflectors now complement the dual exhaust and rear diffuser better.

Lexus noted the power-operated back door can now be activated by an optional “kick” sensor.
Also distinguishing the 2020 RX are two new colors (Moonbeam Beige Metallic or Nori Green Pearl), as well as 18-inch and 20-inch wheels.

In the cabin, the latest RX provides Android Auto and Apple CarPlay users access to functions on a touchscreen with larger touch targets, a simplified interface, and easy-to-use voice actions through Google Assistant or Siri.

The Lexus Multimedia System touchscreen integrates audio and climate controls, as well as images beamed by the vehicle’s backup camera. Standard is an eight-inch display. Available as an option is a 12.3-inch high-resolution, split-screen panel.

Lexus explained that the Dynamic Voice Command (DVC) on the 2020 RX, which comes with the 12.3-inch multimedia screen, can recognize “millions more phrases than conventional Lexus systems” can.

Chassis modifications in the latest RX include using front and rear stabilizer bars that are now hollow to reduce weight, although these have been made thicker and have reinforced bushings to help reduce body roll and improve steering response. The shock absorbers have been retuned to work with the stiffer roll bars, while upgraded dampers feature a new friction control device that helps control high-frequency vibrations for a smoother ride.
Lexus said stiffer suspension settings have reduced the noise and vibration coming from the road.
Added safety features in the 2020 RX count in the Lexus Safety System+ 2.0, which includes daytime bicyclist detection and low-light pedestrian detection along with road sign assist and lane tracing assist. According to the carmaker, daytime bicyclist detection is part of the model’s enhanced pre-collision System, which now detects a preceding bicyclist and a preceding pedestrian in certain low-light situations.
Road sign assist displays select road sign information on the instrument panel while the lane tracing assist detects lane markings to place the vehicle in the center of the lane. The system works with the all-speed dynamic radar cruise control.

Lexus said production of the 2020 RX variants will start in the third quarter of the year.
