KOREAN tire maker Kumho said it has just built the world’s first 20-inch tire with a 45 profile designed specifically for commercial vehicles.

Kumho said it fitted its PorTran KC53 tire sized 245/45 R20C 115/113R as an original equipment to a Hyundai Solati Limousine, a premium minibus sold in South Korea. The vehicle was originally shod with 16-inch tires. The challenge of upsizing these to 20 inches was given to several tire manufacturers, but it was Kumho which satisfied Hyundai’s requirements, the company said.

“The OE approval of the unique 20-inch, 45 series PorTran KC53 for exclusive fitment to the Solati Limousine is further confirmation of our advanced technical capabilities,” said Lee Younchang, head of light commercial tire development at Kumho.

Kumho said that, besides the Solati Limousine, the PorTran KC53 tire is also designed for use in the latest generation of light commercial vehicles. The tire is intended for highway performance. It has a wide tread and a stable block pattern that guarantee outstanding dry handling even if the vehicle is heavily laden with cargo. Broad cross-grooves provide precise steering in both dry and wet conditions. Wide straight circumferential grooves minimize the risk of aquaplaning. A robust carcass results in improved traction and higher mileage, while low rolling resistance ensures optimum fuel efficiency, according to Kumho.
