NAVIGATION app Waze and data consultancy firm Thinking Machines have listed the 10 cities in Metro Manila which would likely get flooded the most this rainy season, as well as those in which the most accidents have been recorded in the last several months.
Waze said the list was drawn up through data gathered from accident and flood reports per square kilometer in the Philippines. The data cover the fourth quarter of 2018 to the present.
Listed by Waze as most flood-prone are Manila, Makati, Mandaluyong, Pasay, San Juan, Quezon City, Taguig, Las Pinas, Navotas and Pasig.
Cities in which the most number of accidents were reported during the period are Makati, Mandaluyong, Pasay, Manila, Pasig, Quezon City, San Juan, Taguig, Paranaque and Marikina.
“The data garnered in collaboration with the Thinking Machines indicate that more can be done to encourage road safety and alleviate congestion, and we hope to continually leverage the cooperation of our 2.85 million active user base in the Philippines to help prevent accidents by providing crowdsourced updates on heavy traffic, floods and road closures in real-time,” said Waze Philippines country manager Sarah Rodriguez.
Stephanie Sy, Thinking Machines Data Science CEO said Waze’s data offer a “wealth of insight about safety and traffic conditions” about the country’s roads. The executive said this can be used to “design policies and programs that improve transportation for everyone.”
