With new ASC, Hyundai, Kia hybrids to shift quicker, smoother

July 22,2019

THIS new system can monitor gear shifts 500 times per second. It reduces shift times by 30%. It’s called the Active Shift Control (ASC) transmission technology.

Hyundai Motor Group, counting in Kia, late last week announced it has developed ASC, which can adjust a transmission’s rotational speed to make it shift gears quicker. ASC uses a new control logic software for the vehicle’s hybrid control unit to align the engine’s and transmission’s speed, resulting in not just faster shift times but also smoother gear changes.

Other benefits are quicker acceleration and improved fuel economy, as well as reducing stress on the transmission as ASC minimizes friction during gear shifts.

Hyundai said the new technology will premiere in the upcoming Hyundai Sonata Hybrid and eventually be fitted on upcoming Hyundai and Kia hybrids.

“The development of the world’s first ASC technology is a remarkable innovation which incorporates precise motor control to automatic transmission,” said Hyundai Motor Group vice-president and head of powertrain control system KyoungJoon Chang. “It will not only save fuel but also provide a more fun driving experience for our customers.”

Hyundai noted conventional hybrid vehicles do not have torque converters. Torque converters, though fuel-efficient, also require longer shift times to ensure smoother gear changes.
