A Hyundai H350 luxury van serves as the Mobile Diagnostic Clinic.

THEY’RE called “Breastfriends” — breast cancer survivors.

In HARI Foundation, Inc.’s (HFI), and partners UP-PGH’s and the UP-PGH Cancer Institute’s “Alagang Breastfriend” flagship wellness campaign, these women are encouraged to take charge of their health so they could continue to be a driving force in improving society.

A key component of Alagang Breastfriend is the Mobile Diagnostic Clinic — a customized Hyundai H350 luxury van — equipped with modern mammography and breast ultrasound facilities. It is manned by UP-PGH staff on medical missions so they could impart information about breast cancer, as well as offer free screening for early signs of breast cancer to women living in underserved communities.

Among the 40 charity patients served at the first medical mission of the Alagang Breastfriend Mobile Diagnostic Clinic are three women who come from different walks of life. They are Aileen Calderon, 57, president of the PGH Cancer Survivors Organization; Gina Balino, 45, a stay-at-home mom from Bulacan who is undergoing treatment for Stage 3 breast cancer; and Emma Anas, a midwife who has been working at the UP-PGH Cancer Institute since 1982.

Here, the women share their close encounters with breast cancer and their transformation into breast cancer warriors:

How did you discover that you had cancer?

Aileen Calderon

Calderon: At first, wala akong naramdaman. That was 2013. Nasa Dubai ako noon [as] an OFW. Wala akong symptoms, wala akong bleeding. [Nagpa-lab test ako], nagpa-pregnancy test pa nga ako. Sabi nila, seven months pregnant ako. Then, at the last minute, sabi nila, “You are at Stage 4 cancer, ovarian. Go home and have an operation immediately.” I went home in 2016.

Gina Balino

How has the UP-PGH Cancer Institute helped you?

Calderon: OFW ako. Wala akong pera, so nasa charity ako. Sabi sa akin ng duktor, “Maghanda ka ng P10,000-15,000 for the operation.” Ang mister ko, madiskarte, so napa-sponsor kami ng PGH sa new bill balance (NBB) ng PhilHealth. Yung NBB ko, libre lahat, pati room. Yung two months chemo, sponsored ng NBB.

Emma Anas

Anas: In my 36 years of service sa Cancer Institute, marami akong nakilalang pasyenteng may cancer — cervical, ovarian, endometrial, breast…. You assist them. You encourage them.

What’s the best advice you can give to Filipinas regarding breast cancer awareness?

First thing is, maging malapit tayo kay Lord…. Panalo tayo.”

What can you say about the Mobile Diagnostic Clinic?

Calderon: I am still on chemotherapy for ovarian cancer [pero] sabi ng duktor, “There is a possibility that you have a risk for breast [cancer].” Kaya nagkainteres akong magpa-checkup.

Anas: Galing akong night duty. Sa buong buhay ko, first time kong magpa-test.
