Electric vehicle group backs Manila ban on ‘e-trikes’

THE Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines (EVAP) said it supports mayor of Manila Francisco “Isko” Moreno Domagoso’s drive to rid the capital city’s streets of electric-powered tricycles and bikes.

In a statement EVAP said its position is aligned with the policy of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and Department of the Interior and Local Government as it “agrees that all tricycles… electric-driven or not, should not be plying national roads, except in the absence of alternative public transport.” The group added such so-called e-trikes and e-bikes should only be used on minor roads and in “cases that support national and local strategic agenda, e.g. tourism [and] logistics.”

The EVAP noted e-trikes in some areas of Manila are operating with “minimal consideration on its proper operation,” creating disorder. It cited though that the properly planned use of these electric vehicles is seen in Intramuros, where these cater to tourists.

The EVAP said it recommends the reorganization of e-trikes service in Manila and is “looking forward to working” with the city’s government on how to properly use these vehicles. It added it will also consult with the Land Transportation Office and the DOTr as the agencies prepare guidelines regarding the classification, registration and use of electric vehicles in the country.
