JAKE Russel Tumampos, a student from the San Dionisio Elementary School in Parañaque, has been named the 2019 Young Road Safety Champion after he was deemed most effective student-mentor in the road safety program aimed at children.
Tumampos was awarded by FedEx Express Philippines managing director John Peterson and officials of Safe Kids Worldwide Philippines during the recent 12th National Safe Kids Week event.
In a news release FedEx Philippines said it supports two local programs dedicated to training children on the basics of road safety.
The first is the Young Road Safety Advocate Program, a peer-to-peer initiative in which fifth- and sixth-graders help train younger children on proper pedestrian behavior. The program, launched in 2004, has to date reached nearly 30 schools in Quezon City, Parañaque, Cebu and Angeles, FedEx said.
The other is the International Walk to School Best Idea search for the school with the most creative way in which to promote road safety in communities.
FedEx said the San Dionisio Elementary School in 2019 presented the Best Idea for its innovative use of social media in promoting road safety. More than 8,900 students, 315 teachers, 182 parents and 82 non-teaching personnel participated in the campaign, according to FedEx.
It noted International Walk to School is part of the Walk This Way program that FedEx supports in 10 countries.
