Things that make the new GLE the best big Mercedes-Benz SUV ever

The new Mercedes-Benz GLE 4MATIC.

IN FOURTH-generation form, the Mercedes-Benz GLE has turned into a seven-seat model. It has also become the most advanced in terms of technology for the nameplate (the GLE was known as the M-Class in its previous renditions).

As the model debuts in the Philippines — local Mercedes-Benz distributor Auto Nation Group is now accepting orders for the GLE 300d 4MATIC, which costs P5.690 million — let’s take a look at the highlight features that make it the best in its class:

  • A four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine that makes 245hp and 500Nm is fitted with Mercedes-Benz’s EQ Boost, a type of a mild hybrid system that recovers energy from braking, as well as shuts off the engine in certain circumstances, to deliver an extra boost of power. It also cures turbo lag.

  • The brand’s 9G TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission sends the engine’s output to a 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. This means the GLE can tackle any terrain.

  • A new muscular, athletic body is mounted on 21-inch light alloy wheels. Adorning the body are multibeam LED with Ultra Range beams, taillights that create an unmistakable Mercedes-Benz SUV signature, and rear chrome-plated under-guard.

  • A longer wheelbase means more space for passengers in the rear, as well as the addition of a third row of seats— a first for a Mercedes-Benz SUV. The rear seats can be electronically adjusted and folded to accommodate longer items and luggage. The liftgate is power-operated.

  • Intelligent Mercedes-Benz User Experience, or MBUX, dominates the GLE’s dashboard. It has two 12.3-inch touchscreens arranged side-by-side that combine the functions of the central console touchpad and other touch-control buttons on the steering wheel for less driver distractions. The MBUX also has a highly intelligent virtual assistant that can be activated by simply saying, “Hey Mercedes.” It obeys voice commands for infotainment functions like destination input, phone call, music selection, climate control and ambient lighting. The infotainment system has Apple Carplay smartphone integration.

  • Safety features include blind spot assist, active brake assist, a 360-degree camera for the driver, and the latest-generation of Mercedes-Benz’s Intelligent Driving Systems.
