INCREASED sales of its light commercial vehicles (LCV) and commercial vehicles (CV) offset the decline in deliveries of its passenger cars (PC), allowing Hyundai Asia Resources, Inc. (HARI), distributor of Hyundai vehicles in the Philippines, to post a 1.6% growth in the first seven months of the year.

The company sold 19,790 vehicles during the period compared to 19,478 units from January to July in 2018.

Its deliveries of LCVs grew 28%, or 8,645 units this year versus 6,749 units in the same stretch last year. Sales of CVs increased 140%, or 580 units against 242 units for the comparable periods.

In contrast, HARI sold 15.4% less PCs from January to July this year, or 10,565 units compared to the 12,487 units it moved during the same period in 2018.

The company did not disclose sales figures for July alone. Previous information released by HARI put its July 2018 sales at 3,279 units. However, the same news release placed the company’s January-July 2018 deliveries at 19,236 units.

HARI credited sales of the Hyundai Kona — which grew 474% to 2,455 units — and those of the Hyundai H-100 as key in driving the company’s performance this year. There were 3,860 units of the H-100 sold from January to June this year, representing a 64% increase.

The Hyundai Accent and Hyundai Reina were its bestselling PCs, HARI said.

“This year has been challenging for the automotive industry but Hyundai’s modest growth reflects its resilience and strong brand anchored on reliable and comfortable vehicles, superior customer service, and continuing programs to ensure worry-free ownership,” said HARI president and CEO Ma. Fe Perez-Agudo.

She added the company expects higher demand because of lower inflation and interest rates, and that it is pushing ahead with its expansion programs, including the opening of three new dealerships in Central and Northern Luzon.

“With key programs in the pipeline, we aim to end the year strong,” Agudo said.
