HYUNDAI Asia Resources, Inc.’s (HARI) corporate social responsibility arm HARI Foundation, Inc. (HFI) said its “Alagang Breastfriend” mobile diagnostic clinic, together with the UP-PGH Cancer Institute, in July and August held its first out-of-town medical missions.
The Alagang Breastfriend program disseminates information and offers free breast cancer screening to women in underserved communities, HFI explained.
The medical mission in Ternate, Cavite was held on July 20. The second activity took place on August 24 in Novaliches, Quezon City, in a place which has an estimated population of 100,000 people. Majority of the residents are informal settlers living on the banks of the Tulyahan River, HFI said.
It added the Ternate and Novaliches medical missions served close to 200 women patients, 10 of whom were referred for biopsy. It was the first time for most of the women to receive a comprehensive module on the benefits of early screening and treatment of breast cancer.
On its second run, four out of the 200 patients screened by Alagang Breastfriend were diagnosed positive for breast cancer. They are now under the care of the UP-PGH Cancer Institute.
Department of Health figures show one out of every 13 Filipinas can develop breast cancer, according to HFI.
