Don’t call the MG 5 a ‘subcompact’

Leading the presentation of the new MG 5 is MG Philippines president Alberto B. Arcilla (third from left). Joining him are officials of Genesis Motors Corp.

THE MG 5, launched at the ongoing Cebu Auto Show, is classified as a subcompact sedan. But MG Philippines said “there is really nothing subcompact about it,” citing the vehicle’s dimensions are closer to those of a midsize sedan.

MG said the 5 is the longest (4,601 millimeters) and widest (1,788 millimeters) in its class, and also has the longest wheelbase (2,680 millimeters). These, the company said, result in “impressive legroom for both front and rear occupants.”

The new 5 is available in four variants, with prices ranging between P658,888 and P938,888.

The 5 is the best-equipped model in its class, according to MG. It cited the model’s 10-inch touchscreen infotainment head unit that can run both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; 360-degree vehicle view (which gives drivers a bird’s-eye view of their car); a power-adjustable driver’s seat; and automatic on/off headlamps as some of its first-in-class features.

The car’s other safety and convenience equipment includes driver and passenger airbags; disc brakes on all wheels; hill-start assist; auto brake hold; push-button start/stop; cruise control; electronic climate control; a tire pressure monitoring system; a reversing camera; and a sunroof.

Powering the 5 is a 1.5-liter gasoline engine that produces 113hp and 150Nm. This can be paired with either a five-speed manual transmission or a CVT with a manual-shift mode.

MG said the 5 is the latest model it has launched in the 11 months it has been operating under The Covenant Car Company, Inc., also distributor of Chevrolet in the Philippines.

“After having launched three vehicles in less than a year, we want to keep the momentum going with the launch of yet another brand-new model,” said MG Philippines president and CEO Alberto B. Arcilla. “With the introduction of the MG 5, MG Philippines now has a model that will be recognized as an important participant in the packed and highly competitive subcompact sedan segment.”

The new 5 comes with a five-year, or 100,000-kilometer, warranty coverage and free periodic maintenance service for one year. MG owners can also download the My MG mobile app, which allows them to schedule servicing appointments via smartphones, or book a visit from a Mobile Garage service caravan, which performs home services for major technical issues. The MG Hero Services also provides 24/7 roadside support through the MG Philippines hotline.
