Go big with the ‘Vespone’

September 20,2019

THE Vespa GTS goes down in history as the model that takes up the baton from the legendary “Vespone;” what Vespas with large, strictly steel bodies are called. The Vespa GTS, in its current shape and with an automatic transmission, traces its roots from the Vespa GT 125 and 200 in 2003. Coming out later were the GTS 250 and 300. This year the entire GTS range sees several updates to enhance performance, comfort and style.

The latest Vespa GTS range now has three versions: GTS SuperSport, GTS Touring and the GTS SuperTech that is fitted with a color TFT and smartphone connectivity via the Vespa MIA.

Three engines are available; 150cc I-Get, 300 Quasar and 300 hpe, or the high-performance engine, which powers the GTS SuperTech.

Marking out the Vespa GTS SuperSport are black rims and matte paintjob options — White Innocenza, Grey Titanio and Blue Vivace, all furthered adorned by graphics. The GTS SuperSport has a double-upholstered saddle with clasp.

The Vespa GTS Touring gets a top fairing for added protection, a rear luggage rack and another compartment under the saddle. Color options are Beige Eleganza and Blue Avio. The bike also has an upholstered saddle and a dedicated plate on the back of the shield.

The top-spec Vespa GTS SuperTech is the first large-body Vespa to have a fully digital instrument cluster with 4.3-inch full-color TFT display. The instrument panel, besides displaying speed, mileage, ambient temperature and fuel level, also works as a display for the Vespa MIA smartphone connection system.

Identifying the GTS SuperTech are matte black wheels and a yellow cover for the horn and the front shock spring. Paintjobs offered are Black Vulcano and Grey Materia. The seat has a “high-tech finish” with double upholstery and two-color stitching with yellow detailing.

Other updates given the Vespa GTS are LEDs front and rear, reshaped handlebars, chrome-plated crests on the front mudguard, and a honeycomb motif on the rear-view mirrors and the grilles. The SuperTech has a new crankcase and silencer covers.

Changes to the engines have significantly extended the maintenance intervals to 10,000 kilometers. The engine is controlled by a latest-generation Magneti Marelli MIUG4 ECU, which conforms to Euro5 standards. The CVT gets a more robust belt and new materials designed to reduce friction and noise. Available with the 300cc engine is the ASR electronic traction control and ABS.
