THE Department of Transportation is finalizing the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) governing a new law mandating the use of child car seats.

The Child Safety in Motor Vehicles Act was signed by President Rodrigo Duterte on February 22. The law bars children 12 years and below to sit in the front seat of a motor vehicle unless he or she meets the minimum 150-centimeter (four feet 11 inches) height requirement. Children who do not meet the height requirement must be secured in a car seat that complies with UN regulations and standards as determined by the Department of Trade and Industry.

A report published in the Philippine Daily Inquirer Thursday, quoting a transport official, said the draft IRR for the law is awaiting approval from involved agencies, and that the law will take effect a year from now.
