Hyundai’s Jan-Aug sales dip slightly, but CV performance remains strong

By Brian M. Afuang October 01,2019

Kona subcompact SUV led Hyundai’s LCV segment with a 231% spike in sales from January to August.

HYUNDAI Asia Resources, Inc. (HARI) said it sold 22,329 vehicles from January to August, a 0.8% decrease from the 22,511-unit tally the company managed during the same eight-month stretch in 2018.

“Our sustained performance amid external challenges is a result of our never-ending effort to provide excellent after-sales services and premium products for Filipino motorists. Challenges come and go, but we go the extra mile for our customers who will never forget their positive experience with the Hyundai brand,” HARI president and CEO Ma. Fe Perez-Agudo said in a statement released Monday.

HARI bared sales of its passenger cars (PC) from January to August reached 11,821 units, a 15% drop compared to the same period last year. The company said this is a result of the domestic market’s continued to shift to SUVs. Around half of HARI’s PC sales for the period, or 11,500 units, were composed of the Hyundai Reina and Accent.

The weak PC performance was offset by that of the company’s light commercial vehicle (LCV) segment. HARI said it sold 9,864 LCVs in the first eight months of the year compared to 8,288 units during the same period last year, representing a 19% growth. While HARI credited the Hyundai Tucson, Santa Fe and Starex for the increase, it noted the Kona subcompact SUV led the segment with a 231% spike in deliveries.

HARI said its CV segment more than doubled its sales of 288 units in 2018 to this year’s 644 units, or a 124% growth. The H350 and County lifted the segment’s year-to-date sales with combined deliveries of around 460 units. Sales of the HD78 medium truck grew 244% over the period, HARI said.

“Increased economic activity fueled by small and medium businesses helped grow the LCV and CV segments. We continue to establish strategic partnerships to empower businesses by solving mobility challenges such as ‘last mile logistics’,” Agudo said.

HARI noted its total sales in August, representing 2,539 vehicles, is 19% more than the previous month’s 2,136-unit tally.
