Subaru unveils all-new Levorg Prototype at the TMS 2019

Expect the production version of this Levorg Prototype to look virtually the same once it goes on sale in Japan next year.

Subaru just unveiled its all-new Levorg Prototype at the Tokyo Motor Show, and according to Subaru, it envisions the Levorg to create “a future that everyone can enjoy driving at their fullest, at their will” in an era where autonomous driving technology is widely spreading.

Still based on Subaru’s “Grand Touring philosophy,” its engineers developed the all-new Levorg that allows the driver and passengers to ”go further with more comfort, safety and enjoyment that makes them feel like time is flying,” and the all-new Levorg features various cutting edge technologies and has been developed as a symbolic model of the new generation of Subaru.

It will be equipped with the new-generation EyeSight, Subaru’s suite of driver aid technology using its latest advanced driving assist system using high-definition map and vehicle locator that supports highway driving, while connected services to be introduced in the Japanese domestic market for the first time.

The all-new Levorg will have the “Connected Safety” feature in the Japanese domestic market. It is an advanced automatic collision notification system that automatically sends an alert to an operator who immediately contacts the fire department and police department to request for a rescue and also coordinates with cooperating hospital for prompt lifesaving, when it detects a big impact from a collision. The vehicle also gets connected to an operator by a push of the button in case of emergency in case the driver encounters any medical crisis.

The next-generation EyeSight comes with a new stereo camera with a wider viewing angle in combination with four radars located in front and rear bumpers. It also can scan 360 degrees around the vehicle and has an expanded range of pre-collision braking operation to cover crossing and turning at an intersection of low visibility. The locator also precisely detects the vehicle position by utilizing information from GPS and uses the Michibiki Quasi-Zenith Satellite System. In combination with high-definition map data, the vehicle recognizes the shape of highway ahead, reduces speed before going into a curve and assists hands-free driving in traffic congestion.

Styling-wise, the Levorg Prototype is heavily inspired by the Viziv Performance and Viziv Tourer unveiled several months back.

Just like in all new Subaru models, the all-new Levorg will now use the Subaru Global Platform with full inner frame construction with more body rigidity delivering superior controllability and dynamic quality. It will also come with its newly-developed 1.8L horizontally-opposed direct-injection turbo engine, which Subaru promises to give a better performance and a leaner burning and environmentally friendlier engine.

Also on display at the Subaru pavilion was the Viziv Adreneline Concept vehicle, touted as a “Bolder” evolution of the brand’s Dynamic x Solid design philosophy. This concept vehicle had its world premiere earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show.

The production version of the all-new Levorg is scheduled to go on sale in the Japan market in the second half of next year.
