The No. 57 Porsche 911 RSR of customer team Project 1, driven by Ben Keating, Larry ten Voorde and Jeroen Bleekemolen, has moved to the top of the leaderboard after winning the GTE-Am class in the 8 Hours of Bahrain—the fourth round in the 2019-2020 season of the World Endurance Championship. The Project 1 car took the checkered flag from pole position.

Project 1, along with two other customer teams in the GTE-Am class, delivered impressive performances with their 510-hp 911 RSR cars (2017-spec). Following the No. 57 car was the No. 86 entry fielded by Gulf Racing, which at times battled for the lead. Driven by Michael Wainwright, Ben Barker and Andrew Watson, the Gulf Racing car managed to take the last step on the podium even after receiving a drive-through penalty.

The No. 77 911 RSR of Dempsey-Proton Racing, shared by Matt Campbell, Christian Ried and Riccardo Pera, finished in sixth place while its No. 88 sister car retired after an accident. The other Project 1 entry (No. 56 911 RSR) crossed the finished line in ninth place because it was forced to take a lengthy pit stop for repairs.

Keating, who led Project 1’s driver squad, credited the team’s strategy for the victory.

In the GTE-Pro class, the Porsche GT Team was struck by misfortune after enjoying a successful 2019 season. The team’s new 911 RSR had at times held the lead, only to have technical problems relegate both works-run vehicles far down the field. A shock absorber broke on the No. 92 car driven by world champions Kevin Estre and Michael Christensen, while a wheel nut on the sister car manned by Gianmaria Bruni and Richard Lietz came loose and caused tire damage.

The repairs resulted in both 515-hp 911 RSR cars losing about two laps to the frontrunners. This means that despite perfect teamwork and a strong performance from the drivers, the gap could not be closed. Still, Porsche heads into the second half of the season ranking a strong second in the manufacturers’ classification.
