Bid on It! Watch Your Car Files: 1968 Heuer Camaro

October 28,2010

Vintage Heuers are always a cool choice, but for an extra dose of retro cred, how about one called the Camaro? Heuer was keen to form an association with the popular muscle cars of the era, thus the name. Bonhams will be auctioning off a very attractive classic timepiece from 1968 that will go perfectly with that 1967 Indy 500 Pace Car. Estimated price range is USD3200 to 4800.

Here’s the description from Bonhams:

The Heuer Camaro was Heuer’s third model line after the Autavia and Carrera. Jack W Heuer was very keen to grow his business in America and was looking for synergies to communicate Heuer’s core competencies in the production of stopwatches, fine chronographs as well as timing devices for race events like Sebring. A new trend had hit the motor industry in the US called ‘Muscle Cars’ and the idea was to put powerful high displacement engines in light midsize cars. These were very well perceived by young buyers and even the smaller Pony Cars like the Ford Mustang first launched in 1964 were enormously successful. Chevrolet reacted quickly and developed the Camaro for this new segment. From 1967 to 1969 the Chevrolet Camaro was elected the Indianapolis 500 pace car; (this) received a lot of press coverage and the name Camaro was a good fit for the new Heuer chronograph launched in 1968.

The watch had a newly designed cushion shaped case and was powered by a manual wind Valjoux movement. The ultimate drivers Camaro is the reference 7220 NT. 72 stands for the Valjoux 72 movement, N for Noir black and T for the tachymeter tension ring at the edge of the dial. The matt black dial has a three dimensional look and has recessed sub registers with angled polished sides and concentric ridges.

This watch is in new old stock condition with a brushed case and it has its original Heuer signed crown and correct fluted pushers.

17-jewel Valjoux 72 manual wind movement signed on the bridge Heuer Leonidas, charcoal dial with three subsidiary dials for running seconds, 30 minute and 12 hour recording, dial signed Camaro Heuer, steel hands with luminous inserts, red chronograph hand, polished and brushed finish case, screw down case back signed Heuer, rubber tropic style strap with steel Heuer buckle, case, dial and movement signed. 37mm.
