Arguably the most famous movie car of all time, the Aston Martin DB5 from the Bond movies “Goldfinger” and “Thunderball” was sold at auction in London for a record 2.6 million pounds ($4.1 million). The car is equipped with the ejector seat, machine guns, rotating license plates, and rear bullet shield (or at least their prop equivalents.)
The car has never been at auction before and this reportedly increased its appeal to collectors. It is only one of two surviving cars factory-modified for use in the early Bond films, and it is known to be the only surviving example. The car was sold by U.S. radio station owner and philanthropist Jerry Lee. He was the Aston’s only owner, having bought it in 1969 for $12,000. The car has only 30,000 miles (48,000 km) on its odometer.
The buyer gets a signed copy of the famous photo of Sean Connery standing with the Aston Martin on location in Switzerland, among other film memorabilia.
The road version (sans oil slick ejector, etc) DB5 was first produced in 1963. It was powered by a 4.0-liter inline-6 with 282 bhp; it had a top speed of 233 km/hour.
