“Don’t Be Evil” is apparently not Mazda’s corporate slogan—at least not when it comes to SEMA. The Zoom-zoom brand demonstrated this with a fleet of modified cars at the Las Vegas show.
First up is a pair of modified Mazda2s. The 2 is positioned as an economy car that’s still fun to drive, and it’s the basis for the Evil Track car. The Evil Track car is equipped for series racing, with US-regulation safety equipment. It has wild side skirts, front and rear air dam, H&R race suspension, Spraco seats and steering wheel, and 225/45 Hoosier race tires on 15-inch rims. The Mazda2 street features a custom light gray metallic paint job with graphic accents, and wide-profile Toyo Proxes special-compound tires.
The MX-5 gets its cute factor toned down with the MX5 Super20, featuring “street-tough style and motorsports-inspired attributes.” The engine is a lusty supercharged Cosworth unit. Interior features suede seat inserts and channel stitching. 16-inch Enkie wheels with Toyo Proxes tires, Racing Beat hollow front and rear anti-roll bars, Mazdaspeed shock tower brace are additional modifications.
A 500-bhp Mazda3? You’d better believe it. The Mazda3 Redline Time Attack is a Super Modified (based on a racing series with unlimited rules) class car with more than 500 wheel horsepower from a highly modified turbocharged MZR engine. 280/650/18 Yokohama Advan Racing slick tires on Volk Racing wheels channel that power to the pavement.
The Mazda3 Turbo Sedan has the look of the Time Attack car, but in a more subdued paint scheme reminiscent of the Le Mans-winning Mazda 787B. A Garrett turbo kit has the 2.5-liter MZR engine producing over 250 horsepower at the wheels.
Our favorite Mazda, the RX-8, is represented albeit in tube-frame chassis form. The SpeedSource Grand Am GT Mazda RX-8 is powered by the 20B three-rotor Renesis rotary engine, with its trademark 9000 rpm redline.
Relatively mild but with the greatest popular appeal, the MX-5 Cup racer is a lightened version of the roadster, with a modified 195-bhp engine. The engine uses a Mazdaspeed cold air system.
