Mitsubishi to launch i-MiEV electric car in US

November 10,2010

Mitsubishi Motors will hold the world premiere of the North American version of its i-MiEV electric car at the Los Angeles Auto Show on 17 November. The American version will be a whopping 285mm longer, with a 110mm longer wheelbase. It is also 110mm wider. That should give more room for four adult Americans as they electric-motor their way to a McDonald’s drive-thru.

The i-MiEV may not look more impressive than a Colt subcompact, but it features an innovative electric drive beneath its egg-shaped skin. Power is supplied by a 47kW (63 hp) / 180 Nm electric motor, powered by lithium-ion batteries. Range is a promised 160km, with a top speed of 130 km/h. It takes about 7 hours to recharge, with a 30-minute 80% recharge possible with a three-phase quick-charger system.

The Outlander Sport (our ASX) will also make its debut at the show. The Outlander Sport will mate a 2-liter MIVEC engine to a CVT, as does in the Philippines.
