If Ford’s Police Interceptor sedan wasn’t intimidating enough, the Blue Oval showcased a modified “stealth” version at the recent SEMA show. Inspired by the SR-71 Blackbird, the Mach-3 spyplane known as the fastest ever airplane, Ford designer Melvin Betancourt clothed the Police Interceptor in subtly changed bodywork. “Right away, they’ll see this vehicle that looks different, that looks sinister – but they won’t know exactly why. Then, as they get closer, they’ll start to see all of these touches that work together to create the overall image.”
The car is lowered by 25mm, and equipped with special 22-inch wheels. The wheels are stacked to give an illusion of greater width. The wheels have a glossy black center and chrome rim. The grille and light surrounds are painted in black to give a bit of understated menace. At the back is a not-so-subtle spoiler. The interior features hidden consoles and compartments, including a weapons drawer inside the globe box.
The Police Interceptor will have either a 3.5-liter V6 with “at least 280 horsepower,” while an all-new turbo V6 will deliver “at least 365” bhp. The Police Interceptor is based on Ford’s Taurus sedan; if you’ve been watching Fringe, you’d know that the standard version can chase down shape-shifters handily.
