While the Japanese are out to electrify everything, the Germans are aiming to produce power the traditional way: with lots and lots of gasoline. Case in point is the new Porsche Cayman R, debuting at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Porsche has sent the mid-engined Cayman to the gym, giving it more power, at 330 bhp, and cutting its weight by 55 kg.
The result is, according to Porsche: pure, distilled driving dynamics. 0-100 k/mh arrives in 5.0 seconds for the six-speed manual, 4.7 seconds for the Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (that’s seven-speed dual-clutch to us non-Germans) gearbox. Top speed goes up to 282 km/h for the manual, 280 for the dual-clutch PDK.
The weight savings comes from the deletion of the air conditioning (that takes it off my lotto-winning shopping list then) and stereo. Aluminum door skins and carbon fiber sports seats also cut the weight by a few kg. Sports suspension lowers the ride height by 20mm. The 3.4-liter direct-injection flat-six engine is tuned to produce 10 bhp more than the Cayman S. Torque is identical at 370 Nm.
