Luxury-branded microcars, thanks to government-mandated fuel efficiency standars, will soon be part of every luxury carmaker’s lineup—at least those not belonging to a larger automotive group. The Aston Martin-ized Toyota iQ, the Cygnet microcar, was the first such example. Now Cadillac has shown its concept, which is thankfully more original, although unlikely to make it to production in anywhere near its concept form.
The micro-Cadillac is called the Urban Luxury Concept, it’s a 3835-mm long vehicle that can seat four passengers. Propulsion is by a hybrid system with a 1.0-liter three-cylinder, mated to a dual-clutch transmission.
The scissor doors, which gives wide access to both front and rear seats, is a neat styling touch but unlikely to make it to a production vehicle. Interior tricks include touchscreens and projected readouts in place of traditional gauges, a child-seat mount integrated into the front seat, twin skylights, a passenger touchpad for browsing information. The passenger can browse and surf without distracting the driver, then send navigation data or even a music selection to the driver. When folded flat, the seat’s rear panel offers modern parents a convenient mount for a child seat, specifically the Orbit Baby SmartHub docking station. Materials are carbon-color wood, aluminum and ceramics.
